HC ‘no’ to gas memorial

THE MP High Court here Friday declined to give permission to the State
Government for construction of Bhopal Gas Tragedy Memorial at the closed
Union Carbide Factory in Bhopal. However, the HC observed that let the
toxic waste be cleared first from the factory site.
Before raising the memorial on the plant site at Bhopal, the State
Government sought permission from the HC on suggestion of the Task Force
constituted on the court’s directives.
In its 9th meeting held on October 16, 2006, the Task Force had asked
the MP Government to seek permission from HC before taking action over
construction of the memorial.
