So, what to do about Turkish architecture? Why don’t the local authorities or Chamber of Architects make a series of a dozen standard house plans available free for the village folk? That would solve half of the problem. To solve the remaining problem, short of shooting all local architects, it should certainly be forbidden for any unqualified settler to influence the design of his proposed villa. Darn it, someone who has spent his entire working life ruining the British car industry has got the worst possible qualifications for designing a house.

Perhaps we should invent a few new Turkish words. Words for “modest” and “subtle” would be a start. Teach them the concept of “flash”, “loud” and “vulgar.” Lock up the purveyors of the stone cladding and plaster statues and we may well be on the way.

I’m pleased to report that a fourth or fifth building on piles is now under construction in the reclaimed swamp area of Fethiye. When the next earthquake occurs, so long as you are in the process of paying tax, banking, visiting a friend in hospital or viewing an exhibition at the Cultural Centre, then you may well survive. Survival of the virtuous, see?
