Mumbai, February 28: The conservation and redevelopment plan of the
Gateway of India precinct which got a go-ahead at the Brihanmumbai
Municipal Committee (BMC) Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, might
not be a welcome step after all. Especially, after the furore it has
created with the Colaba residents and the questions put up on issues of
parking and traffic congestion, by members of the Opposition and the BJP
in the committee.
The 4.6-crore Gateway makeover plan, Phase I ... passed in the meeting
has been prepared by architect PK Das on behalf of the Indian National
Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the appointed consultant
for the makeover project. “The Phase I looks at making efficient use of
the plaza area and aims at creating more public space, and eliminate the
clutter that is existing,” explained Das. The Gateway plaza makeover
plan wipes off the existing parking areas, one which is opposite the Taj
and the other on the left side of the Shivaji statue and garden. Also,
the plan will reduce the garden size and include the available extra
space into the plaza area.
