Kaplicky's library design inspired by sugar bowl, human body

The design of the National Library in Prague has been inspired by Czech wartime bunkers, Baroque rounded forms, human body, jellyfish, pyramid as well as a sugar bowl, but the final draft was motivated by the great respect for the town, Czech-born Architect Jan Kaplicky whose British Future Systems studio won the contest for the building told CTK today.

"I have found it [sugar bowl] somewhere in Berlin, it had a curved lid on the top, while the bottom part was in a square form. I have gradually applied various sources of inspiration," Kaplicky, who lives in London, said about the project that was selected out of almost 400 drafts in the international competition.

The projects of Future Systems established by Kaplicky are reputedly radical and progressive, with typically rounded and organic forms.
