The Art of Central Asia and the Indian Sub-continent in Cross-Cultural Perspective - 12th to 16th March, 2007


Objective : The Art of Central Asia and the Indian Sub-continent in Cross-Cultural Perspective (1st cent. A.D. – 14th cent. A.D.).
The Seminar aims at presenting an extensive as well as an intensive appraisal of art and culture of individual regions of Central Asia, including those which have so far not been sufficiently explored. As many as 16 foreign scholars of eminence from 11 different countries of 3 continents and 17 from India are to present their papers on different aspects of Central Asian Art.

Seminar Focus : Sources of Buddhist Art · Scribes and artists · The Art of Gandhar · The Art of Eastern Central Asia and Dunhuang · The Art of Western Central Asia · Buddhist and Hindu Iconography of Central Asian Art · Textiles,etc. · Issues of cross-cultural influences · Hermeneutics and historical contexts

Presided by : Padma Shri Prof. B.N . Goswamy, on 12th March at 10:30 a.m. in the National Museum auditorium, and Padma Bhushan Prof. Lokesh Chandra, will deliver the Keynote Address.
