Few noticed the irony last week when Mayor Richard M. Daley welcomed the
U.S. Olympic Committee to Soldier Field, the same Soldier Field that was
pitched to Chicago voters in 1919 as a civic gathering space that might
one day host the Olympics.
No more. Because the renovated Soldier Field has just 61,500 seats, far
too few to serve as the main Olympic stadium, and no provision for
expansion, Chicago has been forced to pin its hopes for hosting the 2016
Summer Games on a proposed temporary stadium in Washington Park.
