Let the show begin

After two years of work, city’s first sound and light show - the Son et-Lumiere is set to take off on Sunday. Here’s all that went into its making

“I have no problem with the idea of organising the show, but the choice of the place- the city museum, is absolutely incorrect. The brick wall of the museum has been painted, which has ruined this heritage building and jeopardises the chances of the building created by Le Corbusier of being considered a heritage building,” said Sharma, who had worked with Le Corbusier while planning the City Beautiful.

Sharma further added the seating arrangement put in place by the administration for the show had marred the dignity of the campus. He also feared that with the passage of time, the administration might also allow commercial kiosks at the museum for profitability, which would further spoil the quietude and character of the three museums in Sector 10.

Sharma had accompanied seven other prominent residents of the city last year and had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to express concern about the growth in the city’s periphery which had spoilt its inherent character.

The proposed Urban Arts Commission of the Ministry of Home Affairs was created after the delegation’s visit to Delhi. In the name of saving Chandigarh, the delegation had asked the centre to appoint an authority for the regulated development of the city. “Such arts commissions, headed by the technical experts, are not only there in Delhi, but are also formed elsewhere in the world for the regulated growth of the urban areas. Urban Arts Commission should be a boon for Chandigarh and its residents,” he said.
