National Art Gallery is global with Asian focus
I REFER to the letter, 'National Gallery should showcase art that's
global' (ST, March 26), by Mr Chong Huai Seng.
We agree with Mr Chong that great art galleries need great art to
excite the public and art lovers. Our national collection consists
primarily of a comprehensive Southeast Asian collection, which
includes important works of well-known Singaporean artists. Hence this
is the focus of the National Art Gallery.
Mr Chong suggested that we devote up to 80 per cent of our resources
to China, India and the Middle East. We do not have a world-class
collection of Chinese and Indian art and it will be expensive to
acquire such a collection. Nevertheless, the National Art Gallery will
have significant space set aside for international travelling
exhibitions which could be made possible through loan arrangements
with leading international art galleries
This is an exciting, multi-faceted project. We currently have about
8,000 good art works in our national collection. Together with the
collections by corporate and individual collectors, there is much
scope to curate and promote South-east Asian art, and put it in a
global context to excite the public and art lovers from all over the
world.
When the two buildings are converted into the National Art Gallery,
there will be about 40,000 sq m of space, with about one third of the
space allocated to galleries.
Only a small percentage of our collection is likely to be displayed at
any one time. If we divert substantial gallery space towards a Chinese
collection, there will be even less space for our current national
collection.
Moreover, we will be competing with much larger museums such as the
National Art Museum of China, Capital Museum Beijing and the Taiwan
Museum of Fine Arts, which are able to give visitors a better
experience in Chinese art.
As we evolve this project to create a national icon that Singaporeans
can be proud of, we welcome valuable feedback from stakeholders,
experts and the public.
