In Copenhagen last week Jan Utzon, 62, outlined the problems created
when opera was moved from the main Concert Hall by the architects who
took over from his father.
"At the moment there is so little space in the wings that ballerinas
coming off stage have to have someone to catch them so they don't hit
the concrete walls.
"Some members of the orchestra are sitting up to 12 metres under the
stage. Those are not the conditions we need to keep the Opera House as a
world-class venue."
Sound quality is also impaired because the theatre did not have enough
space to allow music to reverberate.
The Utzons and Sydney architect Richard Johnson have come up with a
solution.
"The ideas came fairly quickly because the only way to create space is
to go down," Jan Utzon said.
