BELL'S Brae snakes down from the Dean Bridge in Edinburgh. Very much
"Old Edinburgh". Not exactly where you'd expect to find the lair of the
next big giant killers to stalk architecture's global stage.
But here they are; not announcing their presence from a tower of glass
and steel, but nestling in modestly converted stables, on a wooded bank
by the Water of Leith.
Their name is RMJM, and they are a collection of mostly Scottish
practitioners of this, the most imposing of professions.

Laymen who have heard of the firm probably only recognise the name
through its association with the Scottish Parliament saga. But in the
business, RMJM is hot.
Let's face it, when one of your designs actually gets panned by the New
York Times, you know you've arrived.
Of course, Edinburgh is only the spiritual home. RMJM isn't your average
stay-at-home kind of outfit. It has set up camp in London, Moscow,
Warsaw, Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok and Singapore. Later this
year, it plans to open offices in Doha, Abu Dhabi and Delhi.
And from these far-flung outposts, it is chasing the biggest, most
prestigious architectural commissions in the world today - and winning them.
