Spin city could have a point
by Angela Giuffrida on Saturday, 21 April 2007
Dubai has long been open to head-turning levels of design. In fact, some
may consider the city as a playground for architects keen to test-drive
their lifelong dreams, which might be hindered elsewhere in the world by
things such as restrictions of height, public protest or even outright
refusal on the grounds that they were ‘incongruous with their surroundings'.
Italian architect David Fisher's (yes, he is Italian) rotating tower is
not the first one to have been plugged in Dubai. Last year, Rotating
City was unearthed in Dubailand and promised to capture the imagination
with spinning villas, restaurants and even a wedding hall.
Later in the year came Time Residences at City of Arabia, which was
flagged up with the news that 24 other cities in the world were going to
be treated to replica buildings - one for each time zone. Who knows how
many other revolving ideas are in the pipeline.
