Kaplicky's library design inspired by sugar bowl, human body
The design of the National Library in Prague has been inspired by Czech
wartime bunkers, Baroque rounded forms, human body, jellyfish, pyramid
as well as a sugar bowl, but the final draft was motivated by the great
respect for the town, Czech-born Architect Jan Kaplicky whose British
Future Systems studio won the contest for the building told CTK today.
The row continues over plans to build a new home for Prague's National
Library. The priceless collection of books and manuscripts is set to
move from the baroque Klementinum building by Charles Bridge to a new
location on Prague's Letna plain. But the winning design - by Czech-born
architect Jan Kaplicky - is attracting no small measure of controversy.
