Bhau Daji Lad museum caught in handover row
A museum city has been denied access to for over a year is at centre of
controversy as trust members say they know nothing of ‘handover’ of
civic property to their managing trustee

Mumbai, May 17: Still awaiting its formal inauguration months after its
restoration, the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in the Byculla zoo premises is now
in the spotlight for another reason: A letter from the administration of
the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says that all artefacts,
books, registers and the museum building itself will be handed over to
Tasneem Mehta, managing trustee of the Bhau Daji Lad Museum Trust and
Mumbai convenor of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural
Heritage).
While the administration maintains this is merely a formal handover of
operations from the BMC—it owns the heritage museum and its priceless
artefacts—to the trust which was formed when the restoration was coming
to an end, others within the trust itself point out anomalies: First,
the wording of the letter is open to misinterpretation, they say.
Second, other trustees, responsible jointly for the management of the
museum, are in the dark about the handover
