PWD’s tunnel road gets thumbs down from experts

Proposal to link NH-24 to JN Stadium

Neha Sinha

New Delhi, May 22: A group of eminent conservationists, including those from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and INTACH, have unanimously turned down PWD’s proposal to build a tunnel road linking NH-24 to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which will be the site for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Games.

Contending that the Lodi Road area, (especially the UNESCO World Heritage Monument, the Humayun’s Tomb) near the stadium is a heritage zone, the group has said the tunnel road would be a disaster. Sunder Nursery on Lodi Road, which houses monuments framing the Humayun’s Tomb, was also to be affected by the road.
