He studies architectural history, walks about to examine things he spots
on the street, has designed houses and a teahouse. Two exhibitions
introducing the world of Terunobu Fujimori, a 60-year-old University of
Tokyo professor also known as the "architectural detective," are being
held in Tokyo. What exactly is the "pleasure of architecture" a la
Fujimori?
From his "dandelion house," which has real flowers planted into the
roof, to the Takasugi-an, a "too-high tearoom" perched atop a tree six
meters above the ground, Fujimori is known for designing "hairy"
architecture that features natural materials like dirt.
A retrospective of his work is being shown until July 1 at an exhibition
titled "Architecture of Terunobu Fujimori and ROJO" at the Tokyo Opera
City Art Gallery in Hatsudai. ROJO stands for the roadway observation
society, a group dedicated to finding unusual creations in urban areas.
