Mumbai, June 2: Tenders inviting contractors to undertake conservation
and restoration work of two of Mumbai’s timeless archaeological
structures—the Gateway of India and the centuries-old sacred Banganga
Tank—have been floated twice. But, sadly, not a single expression of
interest has been received by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums
under whose aegis the repairs will be undertaken.
While the development of the tourist plaza adjoining the Gateway has
been grabbing headlines for the demand by Indian National Trust for Art
and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to axe 115 trees, the vital issue of
civil works for restoring the monuments is being ignored.
