Standoff over new test may hit aspiring architects in city

CoA makes NATA mandatory, asks 5 colleges to stop intake; State refuses to accept it in govt, aided institutes

Mihika Basu

Mumbai, July 04: Students wanting to get into prestigious architecture institutes such as the J J College of Architecture and the Rachna Sansad Academy of Architecture in Mumbai should brace for a tough time ahead with the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) and the Council of Architecture (CoA) failing to resolve their standoff over a new entrance test made mandatory by the council.

The council, in a notification dated June 28, had “frozen the intake” (admissions) at five institutes—J J College of Architecture, Mumbai (82 seats); Rachna Sansad Academy of Architecture, Mumbai (60 seats); BKPS College of Architecture, Pune (40 seats); Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Architecture, Pune (40 seats); and VNIT, Nagpur (40 seats).

If you ask children these days, they will be taking on average 10 different entrance examinations and spending about Rs 10,000 – Rs 15,000 just taking these. Not only that, they will be spending much larger amounts in various coaching classes to prepare for all the exams.

This calls for everyone to sit up and analyse why the situation is so in India and what needs to be done in the interest of the students who want to study in the best possible university and the universities who want to choose the best possible students to be part of them.

What options do universities have at the moment? Either they take admissions on the basis of the 12th Board results, or become part of a test, which caters to a few select institutions, or conduct their own admission test. The matter gets further complicated as many statutory bodies, like the Council of Architecture, have started their own national tests and mandate that students have to take those only.
