It had always been the Finacial Capital of the nation. On Thursday, the
city added another feather to its cap when it became Heritage Capital of
the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Richard Englehardt, Unesco’s regional advisor for culture, Asia-Pacific,
termed Mumbai the Heritage Champion for winning the highest number of
awards for preservation of heritage structures.
Since 2000, the country’s commercial capital has won seven awards. And
now that the convocation hall of the University of Mumbai has received
the Award of Distinction on Thursday, the number of awards has gone up
to eight. More than Rs1.5 crore was spent on the renovation process,
completed in eight months by Abha Narain Lambah. The renovation of the
hall was a part of the university’s 150th year celebration.
