PATNA: Archaeologists are baffled by the discovery of a pre-Mauryan period lion head made of stone from the dry bed of the Ganga at Collectorate Ghat here on Monday evening. This was made possible as the river has changed its course in recent years exposing its dry bed.

As the discovered lion head artefact symbolizes the Mauryan royal palace structure, the superintending archaeologist was hopeful of discovering some more ancient sculptures which would, in all likelihood, prove the existence of a royal palace of ancient Pataliputra.

"Archaeologists could then throw fresh light on ancient Pataliputra," Mishra said adding the remains of the royal palace of ancient Pataliputra had been found for the first time in the northern side of modern Patna.

"To date, we have found ancient remains of palaces in state capital's localities like Kumhrar and Lohanipur."
