Greetings from Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan.
Allow us to draw your kind attention to the following:
a) News item (text version enclosed) in today's (17.3.08) issue of Hindustan
Times (HT) titled 'A War over Water'
b) A picture (enclosed) of the river bed immediately south of DND express
way on the west bank of the river
Sir, The news item so early in the year when summer has not even fully set
in and when it is the same party in power in both the concerned states is a
rude reminder for us the citizens of Delhi regarding the things in store for
us on the water front later during the year.
This also confirms our worst fears about we in Delhi facing acute water
situations in days to come when on one hand we continue to act irresponsibly
in our treatment of our life line namely the river Yamuna and then expect
others (Haryana and UP) to come to our rescue in our time of scarcity and
shortage of water. The stand of Haryana in the news item that while they
give Delhi clean water but Delhi gives them only polluted water is a sign of
times and this very reasonable clamour is only going to increase in future
unless we set our own house in order by taking good care of our stretch of
the river.
In this context the enclosed picture is telling where it seems some
construction is underway / planned in the river bed south of DND in the
western bank of the river. Kindly recall that the Yamuna Standing Committee
has specifically advised against changing the natural drainage flows and
pattern of the river bed in this portion.
It is possible that as it appears it may be a temporary thing (although the
pillars are of concrete) but we wish to reiterate that please ensure that
unless a detailed zonal plan for the zone O under the MPD 2021 is in place
(after all due vetting and consultations including by all the statutory
authorities and the Yamuna Authority under your chairmanship) no activity in
the river bed may kindly be permitted by any agency whatsoever.
