Mumbai, March 30 For over two decades, it was the big draw of the Bhau
Daji Lad museum, a series of more than 300 photographs detailing the
evolution of Bombay, its architecture, its artefacts and its people.
Titled Bombay Photorama, this 65-panel exhibition scattered across the
ground floor was a hugely popular one, its rare black-and-white
photographs appealing to students, historians and laypersons alike.
Now, three months after the post-restoration inauguration of the museum
located in Byculla’s lush zoological gardens, the nostalgic sepia-toned
photographs lie among discarded items in the band-master’s cottage
behind the museum building. Not original prints, but reproductions of
glass negatives, Bombay Photorama is not worth displaying due to “poor
quality”, according to the new management of the museum.
