MUMBAI: With the monsoon round the corner, threatening to damage the retaining wall at Haji Ali sea front further, the civic authorities now want to reconstruct the wall for the security of pedestrians and devotees at the seaface opposite National Sports Club of India (NSCI) at Lala Lajpat Rai Road.

According to the civic administration, the existing retaining wall at Haji Ali was constructed long ago and has eroded due to constant lashing of the waves. A large part of the 1,150-metre wall has been damaged and has collapsed at many places due to the impact of waves. The administration also said large cavities beneath the footpath had formed, which could be hazardous to pedestrians.

The civic body feels that it is necessary to protect the retaining wall along with the footpath, as many devotees visit the two religious sites there — the Haji Ali Dargah and the Mahalaxmi
