MUMBAI: With the monsoon round the corner, threatening to damage the
retaining wall at Haji Ali sea front further, the civic authorities now
want to reconstruct the wall for the security of pedestrians and
devotees at the seaface opposite National Sports Club of India (NSCI) at
Lala Lajpat Rai Road.
According to the civic administration, the existing retaining wall at
Haji Ali was constructed long ago and has eroded due to constant lashing
of the waves. A large part of the 1,150-metre wall has been damaged and
has collapsed at many places due to the impact of waves. The
administration also said large cavities beneath the footpath had formed,
which could be hazardous to pedestrians.
The civic body feels that it is necessary to protect the retaining wall
along with the footpath, as many devotees visit the two religious sites
there — the Haji Ali Dargah and the Mahalaxmi
