Mired in controversy since its inception, the Gateway of India precinct beautification project is now in the midst of yet another storm.
This time, trustees of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), which owns the land on which the iconic monument stands, has alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ignored a stop-work notice issued by the port trust.

The BMC was allotted the 6,700-sq mt plot including the garden and the roads around the Gateway of India on a 30-year lease by the MbPT board of trustees in 1976. The MbPT recovered a monthly rent of Re 1, but the lease expired in January 2006.
