Two city-based experts have come forward with a suggestion that the
retrofitting of lifeline buildings — where public movement is the
maximum — be made mandatory under the law to minimise the risks during
earthquakes.
The husband-wife duo of Rajendra Desai, a structural engineer, and
Rupal, an architect, says retrofitting is the only option left in view
of the rising costs of steel and cement.
Desai said in Gujarat, people are still not keen to have their houses
retrofitted and expect the government to come forward and do the job for
them. “No doubt, the government has to promote retrofitting vigorously
and occasional publicity won't do but at the same time, it should not be
expected to take up all the work upon itself… it cannot finance such
activity entirely,” he said.
