Amid fears that the Bangalore Metro project may be off track to meet
its 2011 deadline, a top official from the chief minister's office
told India Today that the state government will pitch in with funds
and a tracking mechanism to make sure that the city's seven million
population gets a chance to use the Metro train two years from now,
atleast the first phase of the project.
The Centre, which has a significant share in the Rs 6,400 crore 33-km
metro project, will also direct the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation
Ltd (BMRCL) to work in tandem with contractors to ensure projects are
completed on schedule: Reach one (Byappanahalli to Chinnaswamy cricket
stadium on Cubbon Road) began on January 2007 with a April 2009
planned completion. But going by the current pace of work, experts
believe it would be a herculean task to see this stretch ready for
commuters use from March 2010.
Work on Bangalore Metro began well on track with V. Madhu, a 1978
Karnataka cadre IAS officer, who put in long hours to build an
internal team to oversee the Metro project. But after he helped the
project gain a good speed, the BJP government suddenly shifted him out.
