The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s major urban renewal initiative
should get underway today with the eviction of slums alongside the city’s
water pipelines in Dharavi, Bandra and Vakola.
The BMC believes that the slum-dwellers pose a threat to the 70-year-old
pipelines. Living in such close proximity to water that flows at high speed,
they also face constant danger themselves. “Even a small rupture in any of
the pipelines could cause widespread damage and chaos,” said a BMC official.
