Small-scale traders and hawkers have been thrust into the national agenda with the creation of funds for youth and women.

But the hawkers became a security risk and a nuisance to the environment. They caused congestion and harboured criminals. Alive to the fact that no self-respecting city would allow itself to be overrun by unruly traders, a permanent solution had to be found.

Places where hawkers could carry out business in a planned manner consistent with the policy of keeping the town clean, beautiful and orderly were also identified.

The enactment of the Micro-Finance Bill into law is another milestone.

The Government has been at the forefront in clearing illegal kiosks and structures from road reserves in an effort to ensure a clean and secure Nairobi. The removal of kiosks in Westlands, Ngara and Community, though painful, has changed the face of the city. A modern road - Professional Way - now stands where Serena B kiosks were.
